WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University snapped its two-game
field hockey losing streak with a 3-2 non-league victory over Hood
College Tuesday afternoon.
For the second straight year, it was an overtime victory for
Shenandoah (3-2) over the Blazers (1-9).
Trailing 2-0 after Hood scored goals in the third and 37th
minutes, SU roared back for the victory.
Senior Paola
Aguilar, who celebrated her 21st birthday Monday, gave herself
a belated present by putting the Hornets on the board with an
unassisted goal at 54:21.
Aguilar got the ball just over midfield and brought it all the
way to the doorstep, where she ripped a shot into the left side of
the goal.
Barely a minute later, Shenandoah was awarded a penalty stroke
as the Blazers were called for a defensive player stopping the ball
with her body inside the critical scoring error.
Sophomore Sarah
DeLuca took the stroke, and matched Aguilar's effort
by ripping a high shot into the left side of the net for the
equalizing goal.
The Hornets completed the victorious effort 7:10 into the first
overtime when DeLuca poked home a cross-goal pass from Megan
Garrett.
Shenandoah had possession via a penalty stroke, which Garrett
originally played out to the top of the circle. The ball came back
to her on the endline and she fed it across to DeLuca for the
game-winner.
SU outshot its visitors 22-5, including 12-3 in the opening half
and 2-0 in overtime.
Freshman Sarah Clare, who
came on in relief of junior Danielle Lawson,
did not have to make a save to earn the victory.
Shenandoah also owned a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Hornets host national power Lebanon Valley on Saturday at 1
in a MAC Commonwealth Conference contest.
