ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Host St. Mary's of Maryland exacted
a measure of revenge upon the Shenandoah University men's soccer
team with a 2-1 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon.
Shenandoah (3-7-1) had defeated SMC 1-0 on October 27, 2009 on
Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
Unfortunately, the Seahawks (3-7-1) had other ideas Wednesday
afternoon, sending SU down to its third straight defeat by tallying
the winning goal despite playing the final six minutes a
man-down.
Shenandoah (3-7-1) tied the contest in the 80th
minute on a Kyle
Farrell to Billy Sipos
goal, and looked to be in prime position after SMC keeper Paul
Spranklin picked up a red card at 85:43.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Justin Bowers scored for the
hosts exactly 60 seconds later and the 'Hawks were able to hold on
for the win.
Frank VanGessel opened the scoring on the day with an unassisted
goal 6:58 into the contest.
St. Mary's held a 13-9 advantage in shots and the two teams
split six corner kicks.
Shenandoah keeper Zac Rogers made six saves in his
first start of the season.
SU is back in action on Saturday at Averett in a noon USA South
Conference contest.
