Spikers Post Record-Setting Win

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Shenandoah University set a modern era record for volleyball wins in a season Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Ferrum College in the opening round of the USA South Conference Tournament.

The Hornets (18-13) break the record of 17 wins set by the 2004 squad with the program's first USA South Conference Tournament win since the 2003 season.

SU wasted little time in dispatching the Panthers (1-30), winning at 14,15 and 21. The match took just 52 minutes and Shenandoah led for all but two service rotations throughout the match.

The Hornets led the third set by as many 10 points before Ferrum made its biggest run, scoring eight of 11 points to cut it to 21-18 following a Kayla Trippeer kill.

Mary Harshman snapped this string with a kill of her own, off of a Kelcy Brown assist, and SU closed the match out with a Haley Smith kill combined with two FC service errors.

Harshman and Rachel Maki led the victors with 10 kills each while Smith and Megan Gillispie added eight apiece.

Brown had 20 assists.

Shenandoah continues its tournament run with a 7:30 match against top-seeded Christopher Newport.
