WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its first men's
basketball season sweep over Ferrum College in six years Thursday
night with a 64-58 USA South Conference victory before 599
Shingleton Gymnasium fans.
The Hornets (9-13, 6-3 USA South) did it largely without the
services of leading scorer Kevin Kline, who
suffered an injury in the first half and did not return.
Senior Kenny
Robertson stepped up in Kline's absence, scoring a
game-high 17 points and highlighting the night with the program's
first dunk in the past four seasons. Robertson drove baseline and
elevated for the one-handed dunk at the 16:35 mark of the second to
give the hosts a 35-28 advantage.
Shenandoah led most of the contest and had the advantage for
good following a pair of Mitch
Dudley free throws midway through the first half.
Ferrum (10-13, 4-6) kept the deficit to within six points
throughout the first; SU began to pull away with an 11-6 run coming
out of the break.
The margin got to double-digits the first on a Brandon
Bryan jumper at 7:19 and the hosts stayed up by five
points for the remainder of the game.
The victory solidifies the Hornets hold on second place with
Averett coming to town on Saturday for a 4:00 Senior Day game. The
Cougars are one game behind SU for the second place spot.
Dudley and Bryan backed up Robertson with 17 points each.
Derek Mitchell paced Ferrum with 12 points and a game-high 18
rebounds.
