RALEIGH, N.C. - Shenandoah University ran its women's
basketball winning streak to four games Saturday afternoon with a
70-63 USA South Conference win at Peace.
SU (11-7, 8-5 USA South) needed to rally as Peace (7-12, 3-10)
shot a sizzling 65 percent in the opening 20 minutes to help itself
to a 38-35 halftime advantage.
The Pacers hit on nine of their first 12 shots from the field
and spent the vast majority of the half shooting above 70 percent
before ending the opening stanza making 17 of 26 attempts from the
field.
Fortunately for the Hornets, they were able to force 11 PC
turnovers and turn those miscues into 12 points to keep the contest
close.
Eight of the nine women that saw action in the half for coach Michelle
Guyant-Holloway scored at least two points, including a
combined 19 points from post players Sierra Edwards, Amy Rhoderick,
Nicole
Gilbertson and Alexis Hargbol.
Rhoderick led this group with six while Stephanie Holton
had a team-half-high seven.
Peace scored the opening bucket of the second half, but
Shenandoah scored the next five points of the game to knot the
score at 40-40 with 18:07 remaining. The two teams then traded
buckets on the next four possessions of the contest before SU
finally took the lead for good on an 8-0 run that finished with an
Edwards fastbreak layup at 11:02.
Peace continued to hang around, cutting the deficit to two
points on two different occasions before Shenandoah finally iced it
with a 9-1 run late.
The final points in this spurt, a Holton 3-pointer from the
corner with 74 seconds left, gave the visitors a 70-60 lead.
Guyant-Holloway then emptied her bench in the final minute.
Holton led all scorers with 14, the last three coming on that
back-breaking 3-pointer, while Hargbol added 12 points and 11
rebounds.
The Hornets complete this weekend trip with a 2:00 contest
tomorrow at Meredith.
