WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse
team posted its third straight victory Saturday afternoon with a
14-11 USA South Conference win over Ferrum College at rainy Sprint
Field at Shentel Stadium.
The Hornets (4-3, 3-0 USA South) surpassed last season's win
total with the victory over the Panthers (4-2, 2-1).
But it was far from easy.
Leading 5-1 after Morgan
Fields scored off of a Kierra
Nicholson assist at 12:23, Shenandoah found itself tied
with its visitors at 5-5 when Brooke Hewartson tallied off a Jen
Phan feed 101 seconds before halftime.
Hewartson, who had a game-high seven goals in the contest, had
two during this run.
SU answered back 12 seconds before the half as junior Ashley
Heroth converted unassisted following a broken Ferrum
clear.
Freshman Sydney
Anderson opened the second half scoring 18 seconds in on a
free-position shot and FC wasn't able to get any closer than one
goal the rest of the way.
The Panthers cut it to one on two different occasions, but Amy
Rollins and Sara
Mucciaro were able to answer for the hosts and give
Shenandoah a small cushion.
Mucciaro's goal, at 11:17, gave the Hornets a 13-11 lead before
Rollins closed the book with a free position goal at 10:24.
SU keeper Tori
Beasley was outstanding, with a number of her nine saves
coming from point-blank range.
Rollins and Anderson both had three goals for the victors
while Corrinne
Kosmowski and Mucciaro added two each.
Shenandoah outshot Ferrum 30-25 with the two teams splitting 44
groundballs. FC won 16 of 27 draws.
SU hosts Hollins on Monday at 7 in a non-league contest.
