FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Host Methodist University salvaged a
split of the USA South Conference weekend baseball series with No.
8/23 Shenandoah University by downing the Hornets 13-1 Sunday
afternoon.
The Monarchs (13-5, 3-3 USA South) scored three runs in the
first before breaking things wide open with a six-run third.
The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for SU (11-4, 3-3).
Hornets starter Brian Goddard (0-2)
took the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks
in 2 2/3 innings. In the first, Goddard issued those two walks and
then gave up a three-run HR to Trey Such.
SU scored its only run in the fourth when Jesse Henry led off with
a single to center and moved to second when Greg Van Sickler
drew a base on balls. A fielder's choice Cory Nelson loaded the
bases, bringing Mike
Smith to the plate.
Smith reached via catcher's interference, sending Henry
home in the process.
Seniors Jon
Holcomb, Scott Van
Dusseldorp and Henry each had two of the Hornets five hits.
Kurt Kelly (3-1) was the winner. He scattered five hits and four
walks in 7.0 innings. Such led the Monarchs at the plate with a 3
for 5, 4 RBI day that included two HR's and a double.
Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday with a home non-league
game against Virginia Wesleyan.
