WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 8/23 Shenandoah University finished
off a weekend baseball sweep of Franklin & Marshall with a 10-6
non-league win Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets (15-4) once again found themselves in an early hole
as F&M (5-6-1) led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth,
but were able to rally for their 12th straight
non-league win.
Shenandoah tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the
fourth before getting what proved to be the game-winning run
without the benefit of a hit in the sixth.
No. 9 hitter Adam Delauter led off
the frame by being hit by a pitch and to second on a wild pitch.
After Kevin
Brashears moved Delauter to third on a flyout to right, Jon Holcomb lofted
a sacrifice fly to left to plate Delauter with what proved to be
the game-winning run.
SU added another run without the benefit of a hit, this time on
a walk, a groundout, a balk and then a wild pitch on a third
strike, to increase the margin to two runs.
The Diplomats, who scored one run in the second, three in the
third and two in the fourth to chase Hornets starter Vince Claudio, were
shut down by sophomore reliever Bryce Sears.
Sears (1-1) threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, scattering
six hits and two walks against four strikeouts.
When Sears allowed a two-out single through the left side in the
eighth, Shenandoah skipper Kevin
Anderson turned to closer Kyle Scallion.
Scallion did not disappoint, inducing a comebacker to the mound
in the eighth before earning his fourth save of the spring by
getting two groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth.
F&M reliever Justin Thacker took the loss. Thacker (0-1) did
not allow a hit, but gave up two runs on one walk and two costly
balks.
Senior Jesse
Henry was 4 for 5 with four RBI for the victors; he had a
two-run single in the fourth and RBI doubles in the first and
eighth.
Greg Van
Sickler was held to just one hit in four at-bats, but he made
that one count with a two-run single in the fourth to tie the game
at 6-6. Van Sickler also drove in another run with a sacrifice fly
in the first.
SU is back in action Monday at 2:00 against Mount Aloysius.
