Baseball Bombs Mounties

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 8/23 Shenandoah University extended its non-league baseball winning streak to 15 games Monday afternoon with a 24-3 victory over Mount Aloysius.

SU (16-4) scored 11 runs in the first inning as three players: Kevin Brashears, Jesse Henry and Greg Van Sickler, hit home runs with Henry's being a grand slam. Shenandoah sent 14 men to the plate in the frame with Henry and Van Sickler each getting two hits.

Mounties (3-12) starter Sean Steffy only lasted 1/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on six hits. Five of the six hits Steffy (1-1) allowed went for extra bases.

The Hornets banged out a third-best in school history 26 hits, with all nine starters getting at least one. Senior Sean Plouffe, the only player to play all nine innings, was 3 for 7 with three RBI.

Henry finished his day 4 for 5 with four RBI and four runs scored and Van Sickler had three hits in four at-bats with two runs batted in.

Junior Ben Hendrickson improved to 2-0 on the season by throwing the first seven innings and allowing just two unearned runs on eight hits and one walk. He struck out a career-high 11.

SU used 18 position players and three pitchers, including four players seeing their first-ever varsity action.

The Hornets are back in action tomorrow against Washington & Lee.
