Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Washington & Lee University
snapped Shenandoah University's 15-game non-league baseball
winning streak with a 16-11 victory Tuesday afternoon at cold and
rainy Bridgeforth Field.
The two teams struggled in the adverse conditions, combining for
16 errors. Shenandoah (16-5) had seven those miscues which led to
nine unearned runs for the Generals (7-9).
Hornets starter Matt
Griffin (0-1) took the brunt of those errors, as six of the
seven runs he allowed in 3 1/3 innings were unearned. Five of those
runs came in the third as SU committed three errors and W&L
turned a tie game into a 6-1 advantage.
The Generals led the rest of the way, but Shenandoah briefly
made things interesting with a three-run sixth to make the score
11-8. Unfortunately for the shivering home crowd, W&L scored
four times in the seventh to maintain a comfortable advantage.
First baseman Hunter Sarenbetz had the big hit in that seventh
inning rally, driving in two runs with a single to left.
SU refused to fold its tents, scoring two runs in the eighth and
one more in the ninth to approach striking distance.
In the ninth, the Hornets saw their first three batters reach
base safely, but the rally fell short when senior Scott
Van Dusseldorp flied to center with runners on the corners.
Jesse
Henry and Greg
Van Sickler led the Hornets with 4 for 6 and 3 for 5
performances at the plate while Van Dusseldorp had a two-run homer
in the fifth.
Reliever James Dillard (1-1) was the winner for W&L. He
allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk in 4.0
innings of relief work.
The loss is the first of the season at home for SU and the first
against a non-conference opponent at Bridgeforth since February 15,
2009. This breaks home winning streaks of 12 and 15 games,
respectively.
Shenandoah is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 in
another non-league home game, this one against Messiah.
