WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 14/16 Shenandoah University ran its
baseball winning streak to five games Wednesday afternoon with a
9-6 non-conference victory over visiting Frostburg.
Shenandoah (21-5) scored two runs in the second and another in
the fourth before FSU (12-6) tied it with three runs in the fifth
off of Hornets starter Ben
Hendrickson.
After Patrick
Moore (1-0) ended the threat by getting right fielder
Matt Ridenour to ground to second, SU retook the lead for good by
scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Adam
Delauter reached on a one-out single through the left side and
advanced to third on Jon
Holcomb's single through the right side.
Two pitches later, Bobcats starter Greg Ross (1-1) attempted to
pick off Holcomb at first. The throw scooted all the way to the
fence, allowing Delauter to trot home from third and Holcomb to
advance 90 feet from the plate.
Shenandoah added three runs in the sixth and another two in the
seventh to expand its advantage to 9-3.
Frostburg made things interesting by scoring three runs on four
hits, the first a solo HR from Matt Greene, in the eighth, but
Hornets closer Kyle
Scallion worked a clean ninth to preserve the victory.
Chris
Ferry scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh
when Kevin
Brashears beat out a one-out fielder's choice. The inning
ended on the play when freshman Keaton
Neeb tried to score all the way from second base.
Moore earned the win by retiring the only batter he faced. Bobby
Stefanowicz pitched the sixth and seventh before Scallion came
on four batters into the eighth.
Holcomb, Ferry and Greg
Van Sickler all had two hits apiece for the victors.
Shenandoah takes to the road tomorrow for a non-league contest
at Randolph-Macon.
