WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 8/20 Shenandoah University opened up its
2010 home baseball slate Friday afternoon with an 18-3 non-league
victory over Immaculata University.
The Hornets (5-3) scored four runs in the second and never
looked back against the first-year Mighty Macs (0-4).
SU starter Vince Claudio (1-0)
no-hit Immac thru the first 5 1/3, striking out six in the process.
After hitting his pitch limit in the middle of the sixth, Claudio
turned it over to sophomore Matt Griffin for the
next seven outs.
Claudio allowed three runs on two hits and four walks in 5 2/3
innings before Griffin allowed just one hit in the next 2 1/3.
Sophomore Michael Berry allowed
just an infield hit as he recorded the final three outs, including
the first two via strikeout.
Shenandoah banged out a season-high 15 hits in the win,
including two each from Kevin Brashears, Jon Holcomb, Jesse Henry, Greg Van
Sickler and Cory
Nelson.
Brashears, Holcomb, Henry and Van Sickler, the first four
hitters in the Hornets lineup, were a combined 8 for 14 with 8 RBI
and 10 runs scored.
Henry did the most damage with two hits in three at-bats,
including a three-run HR in the eighth.
Overall, 11 of the 14 SU players who had a plate appearance
reached base at least once.
Starter Aaron Dietrich took the loss for Immaculata. He allowed
eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and six walks in 5 1/3. He
was one of four pitchers to take the mound for the Mighty Macs on
the day.
Shenandoah is back in action Saturday in a 1:00 USA South
Conference contest against Greensboro.
