WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its third
straight baseball victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a
4-1 USA South Conference win over Greensboro.
After falling behind early as GC (4-7, 0-3 USA South) plated a
run in the top of the first, Shenandoah (6-3, 1-2) rallied with
four runs in the sixth.
The Hornets were greatly assisted by the Greensboro defense in
the fateful sixth, as the Pride committed a pair of errors that led
to all four SU runs being unearned.
Senior Scott Van
Dusseldorp got things started by reaching on an error by third
baseman Logan Beasley and advanced to second when Cory Nelson threaded a
single through the left side.
Mike
Smith tied things one batter later on a single through the
right side before another error, this one by the first baseman,
allowed Nelson to scamper home with what proved to be the
game-winning run.
The third run scored on a passed ball and chased Greensboro
starter Mike Manfro (1-2) in the process.
Manfro left after allowing the four unearned on six hits and
three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. He had seven strikeouts,
including at least one in each of the first five innings, and
worked out of a bases loaded, no outs situation in the fourth.
Sophomore Tucker Brown then
completed the scoring with a RBI single to left.
The offense was more than enough for Hornets starter Greg Van
Sickler (2-1), who settled down after allowing three first
inning hits to scatter just three more in the ensuing seven
innings.
Van Sickler left working out of a two-on, two-out situation in
the eighth by inducing an inning-ending comebacker to himself.
Van Sickler struck out three and walked just one in his 8.0
innings of work. Sophomore Kyle Scallion earned the save with a
scoreless ninth.
Van Sickler also was 2 for 4 at the plate; he and Smith were the
only SU players with multiple hits.
Grant Kelley and Tyler O'Neill were both 2 for 4 for the Pride.
The two teams complete the weekend series with a 1:00 contest
Sunday.
