WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Christopher Newport University
clinched the USA South Conference women's lacrosse title with
a 21-5 victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon on
Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
CNU (9-4, 6-0 USA South) earns the No. 1 seed with the win over
Shenandoah (8-7, 5-2).
The Captains will face fourth-seeded Ferrum on Friday at 1 in
the first conference semi-final while SU will take on Greensboro at
3:30 in the second contest.
Once again this year, both the semi-finals and finals will be
played at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C. as part of the USA
South Conference Spring Sports Festival.
Christopher Newport wasted little time in seizing control of the
contest; the Captains scored four goals in the first 5:33 of the
contest and led 8-0 before freshman Sydney Anderson finally stopped
the run with a free position goal for the Hornets at 18:23.
Anderson set classmate Amy Rollins up at 15:52, but this would
be as close as SU would get. Christopher Newport scored the final
seven goals of the half to take a 15-2 lead into the halftime
lockerroom.
Junior Jennie Ott opened the second half scoring for the hosts
with an unassisted tally 46 seconds in, but the Captains scored six
of the game's next seven goals to coast home to the
victory.
Sara Mucciaro, at 16:55, and Alexis Landau, with 92 seconds
remaining, had the Hornets final two goals.
CNU outshot SU 39-12, won 18 of 28 draw controls and had a
slight, 14-13, advantage in groundballs.
Tori Beasley made 13 saves for Shenandoah.
