Van Dusseldorp Smashes HR Record

WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior Scott Van Dusseldorp became the all-time home runs leader at Shenandoah Wednesday evening as the No. 7/10 Hornets dispatched Dickinson 17-7 in a non-league contest.

Shenandoah (34-7) ended the contest in the bottom of the eighth on the NCAA mercy rule when it increased the margin to 10 runs over the Red Devils (7-25).

Van Dusseldorp, who was named as the USA South Conference Player of the Year last week, crushed a fifth-inning fastball from DC starter Matt Vidal over the wall in left-center for a grand slam HR to break the record previously held by Geoff Williams '00.

Van Dusseldorp now has 29 career home runs.

The HR was the final hit that Vidal (0-1) allowed for Dickinson. SU pounded Vidal for 14 runs on 12 hits in 5.0 innings and batted around in the first and fifth.

The Hornets scored six runs in both the first and fifth, with catcher Keaton Neeb getting things started in the sixth with the second of his two solo HR's on the day.

Following an out, Shenandoah loaded the bases for Van Dusseldorp with a Kevin Brashears double, a Jon Holcomb walk, a Jesse Henry RBI single and a walk to Greg Van Sickler.

Van Dusseldorp fouled a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left before getting the record-breaker on a 2-2 count. Van Dusseldorp's home run was one of four on the day for the team – in addition his grand slam and Neeb's two solo shots, Brashears hit a two-run HR in the sixth.

Junior Mike Smith (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of freshman Vince Claudio. Claudio, who allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits 4 1/3, tired in the fifth after his defense committed a pair of errors to extend the frame.

Smith came on with the bases loaded and induced an inning-ending double play from Henry at short to Cory Nelson at first and end the Dickinson threat.

Smith's entry began a parade of six SU pitchers in the final four innings. Smith and junior Brian Goddard bookended this group by each retiring five batters without allowing any runs or hits.

SU had 17 hits on the day with Neeb posting a 4 for 4 day that included a double and four runs scored in addition to his two HR.

Holcomb, Henry and Van Sickler all had three hits and Brashears two. Brashears'  next hit will tie him with Jeremy Schutt '01 for the school single-season record.

The Hornets host Stevenson Thursday night at 6 in a Senior Night contest.
