WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Gwynedd-Mercy sent Shenandoah
University down to its sixth straight men's lacrosse defeat with a
16-7 CSAC victory Saturday afternoon on Sprint Field at Shentel
Stadium.
The Griffins (8-4, 3-2 CSAC) scored five of the game's first six
goals and never looked back against Shenandoah (2-11, 0-5).
Junior PJ Cooper tallied the Hornets first goal, scoring off of
a Joe
Avveduti feed at 9:22 to make it 2-1 in favor of Gwynedd-Mercy,
but SU would get no closer.
GW reeled off three straight until Hornets freshman Matt
Henderickson scored unassisted with exactly two minutes remaining
in the first.
Shenandoah was able to keep the margin at three goals by
answering a Griffins tally with a Kevin Totaro to Gregory Love
EMO goal at 10:17 of the second, but Gwynedd again had a
response.
The Griffins scored nine of the game's next 10 goals, broken up
only by a Cooper goal at 5:51 of the second, to lead 15-4 with just
over two minutes remaining in the third.
SU made its biggest run at this point, scoring three straight to
cut it 15-7 with 4:19 remaining. Totaro figured in all three of
these goals, scoring the first one himself before assisting Jimmy Bungert
and Henderickson at 14:33 and 4:19 of the fourth, respectively.
Griffins middle Nicholas Coan led all scorers with three goals
and four assists while Totaro and a goal and three assists for the
Hornets.
Gwynedd-Mercy outshot its hosts 28-27 while SU won 17 of 25 at
the faceoff 'x' and scooped up 32 of the game's 61 groundballs.
Shenandoah completes its season with a Thursday CSAC contest
against Neumann. Game time is 4 p.m.
