WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2010 men's
soccer season in style Wednesday evening, downing Eastern Mennonite
3-0.
The Hornets (1-0) got the first opening contest victory of coach
Des
Lawless' five year SU tenure with two goals in the first and
one in the second.
Senior Kyle
Farrell opened the scoring for Shenandoah by finishing off an
L.A. St. Hill
cross. St. Hill began the run by taking the ball down the middle of
the field, and after being denied on a his shot by EMU keeper Ryan
Baker, corralled the rebound and found a wide-open Ferrell 15 yards
out for the opening goal.
Just less than 16 minutes later, sophomore Jarod Clyburn gave
the hosts some breathing room with a 20-yard rocket from the middle
of the pitch.
Clyburn took the feed from freshman Billy Sipos
and knocked his shot just under the bar for the commanding two-goal
advantage.
St. Hill and Ferrell hooked up again in the 88th minute, with
Farrell threading a long through pass that St. Hill finished, to
close the book on the Royals (0-1).
SU outshot its visitors 18-10 with each starting keeper making
five saves.
For Shenandoah, Adrian
Acosta had a shutout in his first collegiate start.
The Hornets are back in action Friday at the Roanoke
Tournament.
