Hockey Drops Maroons

SALEM, Va. – Shenandoah University ran won its second straight field hockey game to start the 2010 season with a 3-2 non-conference victory over Roanoke College.

The Hornets (2-0) rallied for the victory over the Maroons (1-2); RC got a Llanna Hachborn goal just 100 seconds into the contest to take the early lead.

However, SU did not fold its tents, tying it on a Katie Johnson unassisted tally in the 28th minute before Kaitlin Sommer gave the visitors the lead for good with her goal 58 seconds before halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, Sommer found Maria Payne among a host of women in front and Payne delivered, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Roanoke outshot the Hornets 22-13, although both teams had 10 shots on goal.

SU keeper Sarah Clare made eight saves.

The Hornets return to action on Thursday at 4:00 with a non-league home game against Bridgewater.
