WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its season-opening
field hockey winning streak to three matches Thursday afternoon
with a 1-0 non-league victory over Bridgewater College.
SU (3-0) used a Paola Aguilar goal just 85 seconds into the game
to get all of the offense it would need against Bridgewater
(4-2).
Aguilar's goal, her second of the season, came off of a Megan Garrett assist and on the Hornets first shot of the game.
Late in the second half, it appeared that Shenandoah had scored
an insurance goal from sophomore Hannah Johnson, but the tally was
waived off following a conference of the two officials.
Fortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium crowd, the
Hornets didn't need that second goal as freshman goalkeeper Sarah Clare was solid in posting her first career shutout.
Clare had seven saves, including four in the first half, to help
SU to its first-ever victory over Bridgewater.
BC outshot its hosts, 11-8, and also held an 8-6 advantage in
penalty corners.
Shenandoah is back in action this Saturday in a non-league game
at Virginia Wesleyan.
