Hockey Wins Fourth Straight

NORFOLK, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its season-opening field hockey winning streak to four matches Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 non-league victory over Virginia Wesleyan.

Shenandoah (4-0) got first half goals from Kaitlin Sommer and Casey Hertel to take the lead for good against the Marlins (0-7).

Sommer scored the initial goal of the contest in the 22nd minute off of a penalty corner and then set up Hertel for the game-winner just over four minutes later.

After VWC closed the book on the first half scoring with a rebound goal in the 31st minute, SU kept up the offensive pressure and closed out the contest with three goals in the final seven minutes of the contest.

Senior Paola Aguilar had a goal and assist during this spurt.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Hornets 19-13 and also took 15 of the game's 21 penalty corners.

SU keeper Sarah Clare made seven saves on the day.

Shenandoah completes this road trip with a 1:00 Sunday contest at Randolph-Macon.
