NORFOLK, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its season-opening
field hockey winning streak to four matches Saturday afternoon with
a 5-1 non-league victory over Virginia Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (4-0) got first half goals from Kaitlin Sommer and
Casey Hertel to take the lead for good against the Marlins
(0-7).
Sommer scored the initial goal of the contest in the 22nd minute
off of a penalty corner and then set up Hertel for the game-winner
just over four minutes later.
After VWC closed the book on the first half scoring with a
rebound goal in the 31st minute, SU kept up the offensive pressure
and closed out the contest with three goals in the final seven
minutes of the contest.
Senior Paola Aguilar had a goal and assist during this
spurt.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Hornets 19-13 and also took 15 of
the game's 21 penalty corners.
SU keeper Sarah Clare made seven saves on the day.
Shenandoah completes this road trip with a 1:00 Sunday contest
at Randolph-Macon.
