WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team
battled to its second straight non-league tie Wednesday evening in
a 1-1 home draw versus McDaniel.
Much like their 2-2 draw against Bridgewater seven days ago, the
Hornets (3-2-2) had to rally to the result.
Hilary Hanus gave the Green Terror (1-2-2) the early lead with
an unassisted goal at 39:03, but Shenandoah refused to yield.
SU, which outshot its visitors 24-4, finally made the offensive
pressure pay off just over seven minutes into the second half.
Sophomore Amber Womack
threaded a through pass to a streaking Jessi Dennis, who
achieved separation from her defender and found herself one-on-one
with the keeper as she ran onto the ball.
Dennis calmly dribbled into the box and slipped her shot past
Green Terror keeper Jan Woolley for the tying goal.
Shenandoah peppered Woolley with six more shots in the remainder
of regulation and the 20-minute overtime, but was unable to get the
game-winner.
Junior keeper Kat Terza, who came on
for classmate Brooke Strickler
at the start of the second half, did not have to make a save in
earning the decision as Hanus' goal was the final shot that
McDaniel was able to get off in the contest.
Woolley had 10 saves and benefitted from the Hornets hitting the
crossbar on consecutive shots in the first half.
SU opens up USA South Conference play on Saturday with a 2:00
contest at Methodist University.
