FREDERICK, Md. - Host Hood College handed the Shenandoah
University men's soccer team its second overtime defeat in the past
four outings with a 2-1 non-league victory Tuesday afternoon.
The Blazers (4-5) got a Chris Mendez golden goal in the 99th
minute to dispatch SU (3-5-1).
Mendez' goal came via penalty kick and thus marks the second
time this season that the Hornets have dropped a one-goal decision
via PK.
Roanoke defeated Shenandoah 1-0 on a 87th minute PK on September
3 while Stevenson downed the Hornets 2-1 in overtime two weeks
ago.
The golden goal was Mendez' second tally of the contest. In the
65th minute, he brought the contest back to level with his goal off
of a Jaime Ramirez assist.
SU had taken the early lead with a Kevin Kupris goal in the 23rd
minute. Kupris goal, his third of the season, came off a Carlos Ramos feed.
Shenandoah outshot its hosts 17-12, including 10-5 in the second
half, and won four of the game's six corners.
Adrian Acosta had three saves.
The Hornets open USA South Conference play this Saturday at
Methodist. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
