SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team
earned its first victory of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon with a
2-1 non-conference win over Roanoke College.
Shenandoah (1-2) wasted little time in jumping on the host
Maroons (0-2-1), getting a Hannah Oakes goal in the 11th
minute.
Oakes tally, a header off of an Amber Womack corner, gave SU a
lead it would not relinquish.
The Hornets kept up the pressure following that first goal, and
freshman Brittany Mason made this pressure pay off with an
individual effort that resulted in an unassisted goal at 35:29.
Coach Elizabeth
Pike's side then turned it over to the defense, and save for
one breakdown early in the second half, the unit was stellar.
Junior keeper Kat Terza had nine saves in the game, including
seven in the second half, to help the squad to its second win over
RC in as many lifetime meetings.
Terza had two significant saves in the final 45 minutes, one in
which she punched a shot headed for the upper left corner of the
net and a second from point blank range with just over four minutes
to play.
Roanoke outshot SU 22-14, although the Maroons held just a 10-7
advantage in shots on goal. The hosts also held a 4-3 advantage in
corners.
Shenandoah is back in action Tuesday night in a 7 p.m. home
contest against Hood College.
