WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University guaranteed itself at least a .500 record in the USA South Conference with a 3-0 sweep of Meredith Saturday morning.
Playing in a match that was delayed twice due to power outages, the Hornets (17-15, 9-8 USA South) won at 22, 16 and 11 over MC (16-12, 9-8).
The match, played in the backdrop of a freak snowstorm happening in the northern Shenandoah Valley, was delayed prior to its start by a power outage and then again in the middle of the first set with Meredith leading 15-14.
SU came back to win that opening set as it rallied from a 20-16 deficit with a 5-1 run to tie it at 21-21. The Avenging Angels briefly retook the lead on an Molly Markley kill before senior Rachel Maki stepped to the service line and served the final three points of the set.
The set-clinching point came via a Maki service ace.
Shenandoah controlled the match from there, leading throughout the second and totally dominating in the third.
Sophomores Haley Smith and Brooke Strathy both had a match-high nine kills each with Maki adding eight.
Junior Emily Jones had a match-high 13 digs to pace the defensive effort.
