Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Radford Tops Men's Hoops

RADFORD, Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2011-12 men's basketball season with a 79-50 exhibition loss to Division I Radford University Saturday night at the Dedmon Center.

The game was a countable contest for Radford (2-0) and an exhibition for Shenandoah (0-0).

It was a two-point game at halftime, and thanks to a Bryce Mitchell layup 17 seconds into the second, SU found itself in a tie ballgame.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be the high-water mark as Radford reeled off a 10-0 run from the 16:05 to 13:03 marks to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Shenandoah would cut the deficit into single digits following three consecutive Mitchell free throws with just over 12 minutes to play, but another RU run, this one 18-5, put the contest away.

Radford finished the game on a 27-7 run over the final 11:13.

Junior Dominic Chappell paced the Hornets with 11 points with freshman Ross Heyl adding nine and sophomore Avery Green eight.

Green and freshman James Bowens both had four rebounds.

The Highlanders owned a 41-22 advantage on the boards and shot 49.2 percent to the Hornets 39.1.

Shenandoah officially opens its season on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at future ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite.
