WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Mary Washington sent the Shenandoah University women's basketball team down to defeat with a 60-48 non-league victory Tuesday evening.
The loss is the third straight for Shenandoah (1-3), while Mary Washington (4-0) keeps its record perfect with the 12-point win.
Trailing 17-15 after Kerby Hatter drained a pair of free throws for the Hornets at the 10:07 mark of the first, UMW took total control of the game by scoring the next nine points in a span of 2:40.
Mary Washington would lead the remainder of the contest, and thanks to a 5-1 run in the final minute of the first, took a 32-26 lead into the halftime locker room.
UMW kept up the pressure to start the second, scoring the first six points of the half, and kept the lead in double-digits for the final 18:24 of the contest.
The Eagles biggest lead, 19 points, came with 10:45 remaining following a Sara Jones 3-pointer.
The Hornets didn't fold their tents following Jones' shot, scoring 16 of the game's final 25 points.
Freshman Holly Chittenden had 10 points, Sam Akers nine and Mandy Johnston seven for the hosts.
Junior Nicole Gilbertson paced the hosts with seven rebounds.
Jenna McRae had a game-high 20 for UMW.
Shenandoah is back in action on Sunday at Hood College in its final non-conference tuneup before beginning USA South Conference play on Wednesday, November 30 against Ferrum.
