Men's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University nearly pulled off the first upset of the Rob Pryor era Tuesday night in an 88-87 overtime men's basketball loss to Eastern Mennonite.

Dajon Daniel hit a buzzer-beating layup with one second remaining to give EMU (5-6) the one-point victory over Shenandoah (1-8).

The victory is the fifth straight in the series between the two future ODAC rivals.

With Tuesday's game being the final non-conference tilt between SU and EMU, the Hornets finish with an 8-7 advantage in the series with the Royals.

Shenandoah had led for the entire overtime session, and had a five-point lead following a James Bowens free throw with 23 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, Eastern Mennonite held the Hornets to just one point (on another Bowens free throw) in the remaining 23 seconds.

The Hornets missed four of six free throws in the waning moments of the contest.

Freshman Xavier Alston sent the game into the extra session by tying the contest at 77 with a layup four seconds before the end of regulation.

Alston's bucket completed a 6-1 run to finish the final 1:24 of regulation for the hosts.

The two teams both shot just over 51 percent in the first half as the Royals took a 44-41 lead into the lockerroom.

The margin was never greater than five points the rest of the way save for one overtime possession when SU took a six-point lead following a Bryce Mitchell layup with 2:39 remaining.

Sophomore Avery Green led Shenandoah with 20 points while junior Dominic Chappell had 17 and senior Justin Long 12.

Alston rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13.

RJ Sims paced the victors with 29 points.

SU is off until taking on Emory & Henry on December 30 on the road. Game time is 7 p.m.
