MILLINGTON, Tenn. - No. 3/4 Shenandoah University will play a winner-take-all game with Salisbury University later Saturday after the Sea Gulls held on for a 9-8 win over the Hornets earlier this afternoon.
Salisbury (32-12) forced the 'if-game' with six runs in the final three innings against SU (37-6).
The Hornets, which trailed 9-3 after the Sea Gulls scored twice in the top of the ninth, made things interesting with a five-run bottom of the frame.
Unfortunately for the SU faithful, junior Jake Pendergraft, who had led off the frame with a single to right, grounded to second to end the contest.
Shenandoah had the tying run in scoring position as the game ended.
Senior All-America Greg Van Sickler had brought the Hornets to within two with a two-run double before Nick Beall had an infield single to score Joey Donofrio with the team's eighth run.
The rally was one of two that SU had in the game - trailing 3-0, Shenandoah scored three runs on two hits and a crucial Sea Gulls error in the fifth.
Van Sickler had an RBI in the frame, on a single, while Cory Nelson drove a two-run double into the leftfield corner.
Van Sickler had three of the Hornets 10 hits with Nelson adding two.
Bryce Sears (0-1), who came on in relief of Vince Claudio, took the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3.
Chris Greiner (10-3) was the winner. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits in 8.0 innings.
