WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's field hockey team opened the Kim Iman-Bianchi era Thursday afternoon with a 4-2 non-league victory over Wilson College.
Shenandoah (1-0) led throughout of the contest as sophomore Liz Grover gave the Hornets the early lead with her goal off of a Sarah DeLuca assist in the third minute.
Just over three minutes later, Amber VanHorn tallied off of a penalty corner to give SU a commanding lead.
Wilson (0-1) cut the deficit in half with a goal at 25:40 and the two teams entered the half with Shenandoah holding the 2-1 advantage.
DeLuca gave the hosts some breathing room in the 54th minute by finishing off a Megan Garrett feed before the Phoenix answered again at 55:38.
Grover then fed junior Maria Payne in the 60th minute to provide the final margin of victory.
SU outshot Wilson 30-3 for the game, including 21-2 in the opening half of play. The Hornets also owned an 18-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Phoenix keeper Brandy Holtzapple had 12 saves with Shenandoah stopper Sarah Clare making one.
Iman-Bianchi's club is back in action this weekend at the Stevenson Tournament.
