Hockey Falls in OT

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Host Stevenson University used a deflection to score the game-winning goal Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 field hockey victory over Shenandoah in the opening game of the 2011 Black Eyed Susan Tournament.

Just over five minutes into the sudden-victory overtime, Alison Kagel took a pass from Ashley Beam and deflected in the game-winning goal past Shenandoah keeper Justina Ludwig.

The game-winning goal allowed Stevenson (1-1) to escape with the victory over the Hornets (1-1).

Shenandoah wasted little time in jumping on the Mustangs, scoring just 40 seconds into the contest when Liz Grover converted an Ashley Cross feed.

Stevenson answered that tally with two goals in 56 seconds, scoring at 16:16 and 17:12 to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first half.

Junior Katie Johnson then tied it for SU on an unassisted goal from 10 yards out in the 48th minute.

The two teams played the final 37 minutes scoreless before heading into the extra session.

The Hornets took 14 of the game's 23 shots and held a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Ludwig had two saves in the losing effort.

Shenandoah completes the tournament with a noon game Sunday against FDU-Florham.
