Hockey Falls in Overtime

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Virginia Wesleyan ruined the inaugural Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest in Shenandoah University history with a 2-1 overtime field hockey win Saturday afternoon.

Tara White scored the game-winner with no time on the clock to give the Marlins (3-4, 2-0 ODAC) the win over SU (3-6, 0-1).

White deflected in Evan Bunting's shot off of a Valerie Nowlan penalty corner awarded with 15 seconds to go in the inital sudden-victory OT.

VWC waited until the clock read 0:00 before setting up the corner, with Nowlan hitting it to Bunting at the top of the circle.

White, standing just in front of SU keeper Sarah Clare, redirected the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Five minutes earlier, the Hornets Maria Payne had the same opportunity off of a penalty corner, but missed just wide on a 15-yard rocket.

Shenandoah had taken the early lead on an Ashley Cross to Sarah DeLuca goal in the 11th minute before Skyler Weaver tied it for the Marlins by finishing off a 50-yard run in the 53rd.

SU outshot Virginia Wesleyan 11-4 and held a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners, but Marlins keeper Kirsten Olsen made six saves to help her side steal the victory.

The Hornets return to the field on Wednesday at 5:00 with an ODAC contest against Washington & Lee.
