Hockey Drops Heartbreaker

WINCHESTER, Va. - So close.

Visiting Washington & Lee University prevented Shenandoah University from earning its first-ever ODAC victory with a 1-0 double overtime win Wednesday afternoon.

Christina Benedetti emerged from a scrum just in front of the Shenandoah net to knock home the game-winner for Washington & Lee (4-4, 1-1 ODAC) in the second minute of the second overtime.

For the Hornets (3-7, 0-2), it is the second straight overtime loss in ODAC play.

SU outshot the Generals 10-9 for the game, including 6-2 in the opening half, but could not find the back of the W&L net.

Generals keeper Kirsten Kyne had five of her eight saves in that opening 35 minutes to keep her team in position to steal the victory.

Shenandoah also held an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners. SU had seven of 10 corners awarded in the first half.

Hornets goalie Sarah Clare made five saves.

SU takes to the road this weekend for a Saturday ODAC game at Roanoke. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
