Men's Soccer Wins First

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2011 season Wednesday night with a 1-0 non-league win over Hood.

The triumph snaps an 11-match winless streak for the Hornets (1-6-1) and is the first victory for new head coach Corbin Sutton.

Sutton took over the helm of the program this past April.

Shenandoah had not won since defeating Bluefield (W. Va.) 5-1 on October 13, 2010. SU had two ties, the second on September 11 versus Washington (Md.), during this winless streak.

Sophomore Tedo Al-Hamdan scored what proved to the game-winner in the 15th minute when he took a through pass from classmate Kevin Kupris and stuffed it past Blazers keeper Will Lane.

The shot, the second of the game for the Hornets, was one of 13 the team had on the night.

Hood managed eight shots, five on goal, but all five were turned away by Shenandoah keeper James Dutcher.

The shutout is the second of the season for Dutcher.

The Hornets also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

SU opens up USA South Conference play on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. versus Methodist. This game is the opener in a tripleheader of action - the Hornet women take on Methodist at 2 while the football team hosts Greensboro at 7.
