WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Catholic University used a quick two-goal run in the first half Wednesday afternoon to key a 3-0 non-league men's soccer victory over Shenandoah.
The Cardinals (2-1) scored goals at 11:31 and 11:56 to take a lead they would not relinquish over SU (0-4).
Ben Fernandez had the opening goal, heading home a cross from Alex Sagastume, before Earl Hamilton tallied the insurance goal 25 seconds later.
Hamilton took a through pass from Michael DiMarco and found himself on the Hornets doorstep, where he easily pushed his shot past keeper James Dutcher.
The Cards, who took 10 of the 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes, led 2-0 at the break.
DiMarco closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal 36 seconds into the second half.
Shenandoah saw its best chance to score turned away by CUA keeper Sean Libby in the 84th minute. Awarded a penalty for a takedown in the box, sophomore Kevin Kupris hit a low-liner toward the left post that Libby guessed correctly on and made a kick save to maintain his clean sheet.
Catholic outshot Shenandoah 18 to three and had four of the game's seven corners.
Dutcher made five saves.
Shenandoah is back in action Sunday at 2:00 in a home non-league contest against Washington (Md.). The university will hold a special September 11 ceremony prior to the contest.
