WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University set a new program record for field hockey victories in a season with a 1-0 ODAC triumph over Roanoke College Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets (9-6, 3-3 ODAC) break the record originally set by the 2010 team with the one-goal win over the Maroons (4-10, 3-4).
The win also keeps SU on pace to earn an ODAC Tournament berth. The top six teams in the league make the tourney, and Shenandoah now stands tied with Eastern Mennonite for fourth. The Hornets and Royals meet one week from Wednesday in Winchester in the final home game of the regular season for Shenandoah.
Senior Amber VanHorn had the lone goal of the contest, scoring off of an Alexandra Darrow penalty corner insertion in the 13th minute.
VanHorn did have a chance for an insurance goal as SU was awarded a stroke, but RC keeper Darian Shuker made a diving save to her right to keep the score 1-0.
Shenandoah outshot the Maroons 10-5 and had six of the game's 10 corners.
Shuker made five saves for the visitors and Sarah Clare had one stop for the Hornets.
Shenandoah travels to Randolph-Macon for an 11 a.m. game Saturday morning.
