Women Earn First Victory

CARLISLE, Pa. – Shenandoah University earned its first women's basketball victory of the 2012-13 season Sunday afternoon with a 79-52 win over Penn State – Berks in the consolation game of the 2012 Days Inn Shootout hosted by Dickinson College.

The Hornets (1-2) win is also the first for new coach C.K. Calhoun.

After PSU-Berks (0-2) scored three of the initial five points of the game, Shenandoah never trailed again after sophomore Holly Chittenden hit a jumper in the lane at the 18:11 mark.

The Nittany Lions were able to tie the game at 8-8 before Shenandoah took total control of the contest by scoring 15 of the game's next 20 points.

The Hornets lead, at nine points by the 12:23 mark, reached a half-high 16 points following a Corin Scott bucket with 8:29 remaining.

Shenandoah took a 40-25 lead into the halftime break thanks to 13 points from Chittenden, eight from Scott and another seven by junior Sara D'Amico.

The second half brought more of the same as SU expanded its lead throughout the half. The bulge reached 20 for the first as Crystal Petrus hit three in a row from the charity stripe at 13:47 and 25 when Imani Heggins finished off a 3-point play six minutes after Petrus' foul shots.

All 10 women in uniform scored in the game with nine of the 10 getting at least two points in the second half.

Chittenden led all players with a career-high 22 points, Petrus added 12 and Scott 10 for the victors.

Chittenden earned All-Tournament honors for SU.

Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday with a 6:00 road contest at nationally ranked Mary Washington.
