Bobcats Outlast Men

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Frostburg State took advantage of Shenandoah's mistakes Monday night in an 80-69 non-conference men's basketball victory over the Hornets.

Frostburg (2-2) scored 31 points off of 18 SU turnovers on its way to the 11-point victory.

Shenandoah (2-4), which led 38-36 at the break, had 10 points off of the Bobcats 11 turnovers.

SU split those 18 turnovers equally between the two halves.

Trailing 30-17 with 4:52 remaining in the first, Shenandoah roared back into the contest on the strength of a 21-8 run to finish the stanza.

Coach Rob Pryor's club scored the initial four points of the second before Frostburg reasserted control.

The Bobcats had a 13-0 run from the 18:23 to 16:03 marks to turn a 42-38 deficit into a 49-42 lead - SU was held without a field goal from the time Avery Green hit a jumper at 18:54 until Jimi Starks matched Green with one of his own at 12:10.

The only Shenandoah points during this period were five Xavier Alston free throws.

SU was able to cut the deficit to five, with 10:25 remaining but could get no closer.

Frostburg led by at least 10 points for the final 6:05.

Freshman Sharif Almulla led the hosts with 17 points while Alston had 12 and Bryce Mitchell 10.

Christian Jackson had a game-high 27 for the victors.

Shenandoah had a 41-35 advantage on the glass with Alston grabbing nine of those boards.

The Hornets are on the road Wednesday at Marymount in an 8:00 non-league contest.
