GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Host Gettysburg College used a big run midway through the second half to fuel a 66-52 non-conference men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Saturday evening.
The Bullets (3-6) sealed the victory by turning a two-point lead into a 12-point advantage on the strength of a 12-2 run from the 10:47 to 6:40 marks of the second.
Sophomore Xavier Alston finally stopped the bleeding for SU (3-7) with a 3-pointer at the 5:47 mark, but the Hornets would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Shenandoah made its final run with a Shaquille Rodney layup with 3:47 remaining to make 58-49 in favor of the hosts, but GC forced the Hornets to miss a pair of layups while hitting two free throws and a jumper of its own to extend the lead back to 13 points by the 2:03 mark.
SU rode a strong performance from outside the arc in the opening stanza to trail by just three, 28-25, at the break.
The Hornets, who had just eight first-half field goals, drained five of them from behind the line to keep themselves in it.
Freshman Sharif Almulla and sophomore Eli McEathron both were 2 for 2 on 3-pointers with junior Bryce Mitchell contributing the final 3-ball.
Almulla led SU with 13 points with Bryce Mitchell adding nine and Jared Carithers seven.
Christian Bors had a career-highs in points, 24, and rebounds, 13, for the victors.
Gettysburg owned a 40-24 advantage on the glass.
Shenandoah completes the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule on Monday with a 6:00 non-league game at Dickinson.
Notes: Saturday's game was the first between the two schools since the 1988-89 season… SU, thanks to wins in 1987-88 and 1988-89, holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series…
