Women Rout Squirrels

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its third straight win Saturday afternoon with a 76-41 non-league victory over former USA South Conference foe Mary Baldwin.

The Hornets (4-6) scored just three seconds into the game and never looked back against the short-handed Squirrels (0-7).

Mary Baldwin dressed just six women for the game and saw its five starters all play at least 33 minutes.

Shenandoah had all 11 of its healthy players appear in both halves of the contest with 10 of the 11 playing at least 12 minutes and all 11 scoring at least one point.

The Hornets, who led 30-21 at halftime, scored the first 10 points of the second and 13 of the initial 15 points of the stanza to clinch the contest.

Freshman Imani Heggins, who was one of three SU players in double figures with 11 points, scored the first eight points of the second in a span of 2:58.

The lead remained at least 16 points for the remainder of the game and reached 36 points with 2:25 remaining.

Shenandoah also owned a 56-24 advantage on the glass, which helped the hosts to a 30-18 bulge in paint scoring and a led to SU scoring all 26 of the game's second-chance points.

Junior Sarah D'Amico led the victors with 12 points with Heggins and Holly Chittenden adding 11.

Junior Crystal Petrus had a game and career-high 10 rebounds. Petrus' 10 boards doubles her previous career-best.

Shamanda Washington had 21 points for MBC.

SU plays its final game of 2012 on Monday evening with a 7 p.m. home non-league contest against St. Mary's of Maryland.
