Tigers Rally Past Men

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Hampden-Sydney used a big second half run to key a 91-62 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday night.

The Tigers (7-1, 2-0 ODAC) erased a one-point, 36-35, deficit with a 14-0 run from the 18:37 to 17:06 marks of the second to seize control of the contest.

Shenandoah (3-5, 0-3) had given H-SC all it could handle up to that point.

Trailing 27-17 with 9:27 to play in the first, SU finished the half with a 17-11 run to trail by just one, 35-34, at the break.

The Hornets had the possession to start the second, and after sophomore Xavier Alston hit a turnaround jumper 43 seconds into the stanza, Shenandoah owned that 36-35 lead.

Unfortunately for the home fans, Alston's second chance bucket ignited the Tigers as they scored eight straight points in a span of 91 seconds to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Now with the momentum, Hampden-Sydney scored 30 of the next 34 points of the game in a span of 8:18 to take a 65-40 lead by the midway point of the second half.

The Tigers had two dunks, three 3-pointers and five layups in this spurt as 18 of their points came from inside the paint and 10 came out of transition.

Thanks to all of that paint production, H-SC shot a sizzling 58 percent in the second half (21 of 36) and 52 percent (34 of 66) for the game.

Hampden-Sydney put five players: Harrison George, Cam Anderson, Greg Lewis, Mike Murray and Sam Dale, in double figures.

Anderson led this group with 14.

Jared Carithers had 15 points and Avery Green 10 for su.

Shenandoah stays in conference with an ODAC contest at Randolph on Saturday. Opening tip is scheduled for 2:00.
