Meredith Rallies Over Women

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Meredith College finished off a season sweep of the Shenandoah University women's basketball team with a 66-56 USA South Conference win Sunday afternoon.

Much like in its initial meeting of the season, MC (6-17, 4-12 USA South) erased a double-digit second half deficit to rally for the win over the Hornets (9-14, 6-10).

Leading 47-36 after a Holly Chittenden jumper with 16:50 remaining, SU watched the Avenging Angels get back into the game with a 9-0 run over the next 3:04.

Shenandoah answered with a 5-0 spurt in the next 64 seconds, but Meredith countered by scoring the game's next 13 points in a span of 6:20 to take a lead it would not relinquish.

SU was able to cut the deficit to two points thanks to an Arianna Beard layup followed by a pair of Sara D'Amico free throws, but MC clinched the game by scoring the final eight points of the contest.

Shenandoah was held without a field goal for the final 4:35.

The Hornets double-digit lead was the team's second of the game - SU held a 35-25 lead with 1:42 remaining in the first before Meredith reeled off seven straight in just 57 seconds to make it 35-32 with 28 seconds left in the first.

Shenandoah took a 37-32 lead into the half thanks to a buzzer-beating stickback.

SU held a 52-46 advantage on the boards and outscored its visitors 20-16 on points in the paint and had 15 of the game's 16 second-chance points.

Sam Akers led SU with 10 points. She had all of her production in the first half.

Megan Rahn had 23 and Kristen Alford 16 for the victors.

Shenandoah plays the final home USA South Conference contest in school history on Wednesday when it hosts Christopher Newport in a doubleheader with the Hornet men beginning at 5:30.
