Baseball Powers Past Mounties

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 21/RV Shenandoah University earned its second non-league baseball victory in as many days with a 13-4 victory over Mount Aloysius Tuesday afternoon.

Shenandoah (3-2) led throughout the contest, but needed a four-run seventh backed up with a four-run eighth to finally put away the Mounties (0-1).

Leading 5-1 after scoring three times in the sixth, SU saw Mount touch reliever Steven Walker for three runs on four hits in the seventh.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Hornets skipper Kevin Anderson turned to senior lefty Patrick Moore, and Moore ended the Mounties threat by striking out cleanup hitter Aaron Kovach to end the frame.

Moore's inning-ending K ended up saving the victory for freshman Matt Riegler (1-0).

Riegler, in his first career start, earned the victory by allowing just an unearned run on five hits and  two walks in 6.0 innings.

He also struck out five.

Riegler's classmate, third baseman Dan Powers, keyed the 13-hit attack with a 2 for 4, 2 RBI performance that included his first career home run.

Powers led off the SU sixth with a shot over the left-field fence off reliever Joe Hribar.

Powers was one of four Shenandoah players with multiple hits. Senior Jake Pendergraft led this group with four hits and three RBI in five at-bats while Kurt Krout and Nick Beall were 2 for 5 and 2 for 3, respectively.

Alex Martin had three hits and Lucas Szymanski had three and two hits for MAC, respectively.

The Hornets take to the road Wednesday for a non-league game at future ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite.
