WINCHESTER, Va. - A furious Shenandoah rally fell just short Tuesday evening in a 3-2 ODAC overtime field hockey loss to Bridgewater College.
Trailing 2-0 with just less than five minutes to play, Shenandoah (5-5, 0-2 ODAC) scored two goals in a span of 3:30 to force OT against the Eagles (5-3, 2-0).
SU then had two chances in overtime plus the only penalty corner of the session, but saw Jennifer Tompkins slide her shot past Hornets goalkeeper Sarah Clare at 82:02 for the game-winning tally.
Tompkins got her feed from Caroline Augsburger and was right on top of Clare before slipping her shot into the left side of the goal.
Tompkins' tally ruined a comeback that saw Sarah DeLuca and Hannah Johnson score for the hosts at 66:19 and 69:49, respectively.
Freshman Alexandra Darrow set up DeLuca's tally.
BC had taken the early lead on goals in the third and and 18th minutes.
Bridgewater outshot its hosts 15-13 with the two teams splitting 20 penalty corners.
Clare had eight saves.
Shenandoah is back in action on Thursday with a 4:30 non-league match against Gettysburg.
