WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its first women's soccer victory of the 2012 season Tuesday night with a 3-0 non-league shutout over the Catholic University of America.
Shenandoah (1-2) took a lead it would not relinquish by scoring what is believed to be the fastest goal in program history.
Just 22 seconds in, senior Katie Cataldo corraled a through pass and was able to bear down on Cardinals keeper Lexi Halperin and unleash a 10-yard shot.
Halperin got a hand on the shot, but freshman Kati Richardson ran on to the deflection and knocked it home for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
In the 39th minute, senior Sarah Hensley made a great individual play to produce the second goal. Running down the same sideline that produced the opening goal, Hensley threaded a perfect pass into the middle of the pitch for junior Missy Volonino, who easily redirected in from the doorstep.
Sophomore Kelli Kitchens closed the book on the evening's scoring by finishing off a Danielle Burris cross with just over 30 minutes to play.
SU outshot CUA (0-2) 11-1, but the Cardinals had a 6-1 advantage in corners.
Shenandoah keeper Nicole Pratt made one save to post her first career shutout.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday at Salisbury.
