Marlins Spear Men's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan used a big run late in the first half on its way to an 87-54 ODAC men's basketball victory over host Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

The Marlins (8-4, 4-0 ODAC) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win over Shenandoah (3-10, 0-4).

Leading 24-19 after Shaquille Rodney hit a layup for the Hornets at the 6:14, VWC went on a 23-7 run to finish the first half and take a 47-26 lead into the halftime intermission.

The first five points of the run came in just 35 seconds as Chris Astorga hit a layup in the paint followed by a Chris Teasley three-point play.

SU answered with Jared Carithers and Sharif Almulla jumpers before the Marlins scored 28 of the game's next 31 points in a run that sandwiched halftime.

Almulla briefly stopped the run with a layup at the 16:09 mark of the second but Virginia Wesleyan reeled off 18 of the game's next 20 points to push its margin to 45 points.

Shenandoah finished the game by scoring 24 of the final 36 points.

Teasley led the victors with 14 points with Astorga, Sedric Nady and Cameron Owens adding 12 each.

Carithers paced the hosts with a co-game-high 14 points while Xavier Alston had 11 points off the bench.

The two teams split 76 rebounds.

SU is back in action on Wednesday at Randolph-Macon in a 7:00 ODAC contest.
