'Hawks Slip Past Hockey

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting St. Mary's (Md.) made a lone first half goal stand up in a 1-0 non-conference field hockey victory over Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.

Alli Szymanski backhanded a Carly Todd cross in the seventh minute to tally the lone goal of the game for St. Mary's (7-2).

Shenandoah (4-7) had numerous excellent chances to score - sophomore Presha Merritt hit the post in the first half and the Hornets had 10 of their 12 penalty corners in the final 35 minutes of play.

The last two of those came with time expired and SMC was forced to come up with a defensive save on the first one before ending the game when SU pushed the ball over the end line following the second corner.

Seahawks keeper Christy Bishop three of her five saves in the second half.

Shenandoah goalie Sarah Clare had seven of her eight shots in the initial 35 minutes of play.

SU returns to ODAC play on Saturday with a contest at Sweet Briar.
