ASHLAND, Va. – No. 3/6 Christopher Newport University used a hot shooting performance from the field in the second half to key an 89-58 women's basketball victory over Shenandoah University in the second round of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Saturday afternoon.
CNU (1-1) shot 66 percent from the field in the second half to turn a 38-30 halftime advantage into the 31-point victory.
Leading 40-31 after freshman Erin French hit one of two from the line for the Hornets (0-2), Christopher Newport scored the next 11 points of the contest to take a 51-31 lead by the 17:05 mark.
From this point on, the Captains lead did not drop below 18 points.
Another run, this one 14-4, pushed the lead out to 31 by the 7:24 mark and eventually reached 32 points on three different occasions.
Sophomore Imani Heggins, who led all scorers with 24 points, was named to the All-Tournament team for SU.
Heggins also had a game-high seven rebounds.
Shenandoah shot 14 for 39 (36 percent) for the game and won the battle of the glass 39-32.
The Hornets return to the court on Wednesday at Lynchburg College in the ODAC opener for both schools.
