WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University rode the hot hand of junior Crystal Petrus to earn a 65-58 overtime victory over Randolph-Macon Tuesday night in ODAC women's basketball action.
Petrus had a career-high 31 points, including all seven in the overtime, to help SU (11-13, 7-8 ODAC) to the win over R-MC (5-19, 4-11).
The victory also clinches a first round home game for the Hornets in the upcoming ODAC Tournament. Shenandoah will host an opponent to be determined on Monday night at 7:00 in the first round of the 12-team tourney.
After the two teams were held without a point for the initial 2:40 of the overtime, Petrus put the hosts in front to stay by draining a 3-pointer from the corner.
She then hit layups at 1:31 and :26 to seal the victory.
For good measure, with four seconds remaining, the junior blocked Hannah Livermon's 3-point attempt from the corner to keep Macon scoreless in the extra session.
Shenandoah had the last possession of regulation as senior Nicole Gilbertson gathered up a loose ball under the 'Jackets basket with six seconds left and dribbled the length of the floor only to come up just short on her buzzer-beating attempt.
The two teams combined to miss the first 11 shots of the overtime before Petrus swished the corner '3'.
Macon, which outrebounded SU 46-44, had a 30-28 lead at the after after shooting 42 percent from the field in the opening stanza.
The 'Jackets also forced 28 Shenandoah turnovers, including 14 in the first half.
In addition to Petrus' 31, Holly Chittenden and Gilbertson both had 10 points.
Lauren Vugteveen had 13 points and 11 rebounds for R-MC.
The Hornets complete the regular season on Saturday with a 4:00 game at Washington and Lee.
