LEXINGTON, Va. – Shenandoah University fell just short in seeking its first ever ODAC men's basketball win Saturday afternoon in a 61-60 loss at Washington and Lee.
J.D. Ey hit a pair of free throws, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and then made a layup in the final 16 seconds to give W&L (13-12, 8-8 ODAC) the comeback victory over SU (3-22, 0-16).
Ey's steal and bucket erased an eight-point Shenandoah lead in the final 2:09.
Freshman Sharif Almulla gave the Hornets that eight-point advantage with a three-pointer at the 2:09 mark; SU then turned it over three times and missed two free throws (including the front end of a one-and-one) going down the stretch.
Freshman Shaquille Rodney gave the Hornets their last point by hitting one of two from the line with 26 seconds left to give SU a 60-57 lead; the Generals then missed a 3-pointer before Almulla fouled Ey with 16 seconds left and set up the final sequence of events.
Shenandoah was able to get off a shot following Ey's layup.
W&L took a 33-26 lead into the halftime locker room but could only watch as SU battled back with a 16-2 run that sandwiched the break.
Rodney gave the Hornets the lead on a 3-pointer at 16:48 and from this point on, the two teams were separated by no more than four points before a 14-6 SU run gave the visitors that eight-point lead.
Ey led the victors with a game-high 23 points while Jared Carithers had 17 for Shenandoah.
The ODAC pairings will be officially announced later this evening. The Hornets will play at the No. 5 seed on Tuesday at 7:00.
