WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 23/27 Shenandoah University opened its 2013 baseball season Saturday afternoon with a non-league doubleheader split with Misercordia University.
The Hornets (1-1) rebounded from a 2-1 loss in the opener to take game two 5-3 over the Cougars (1-1).
A four-run fifth provided SU with all of the offense it would need in the nightcap.
Senior Nick Beall, a pre-season All-America, provided the big blow with a two-run double to left to make the score 3-1.
Shenandoah had tied the game on two walks and two hit batters and completed the scoring on a Michael Paul groundout to second.
Misercordia threatened in both the sixth and seventh, but Matt Riegler induced an inning-ending fielder's choice in the sixth and Cameron Lundmark ended the game by getting a groundball out in the seventh.
Lundmark, the Hornets starting shortstop, came on in relief of Riegler with the bases loaded and got leadoff hitter Chris Boroch to ground to end the contest.
Freshman Ryan Mossman (1-0), who came on for classmate Darrell Thompson, was the winning pitcher in game two. Mossman allowed two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Riegler recorded the next four outs before turning it over to Lundmark for the final out.
MU did all of its game one damage in the fifth, scoring two runs on four hits and a hit batter off of senior Nick McMahon (0-1).
Shenandoah cut the deficit in half with one run in the seventh and had the tying run at third base when the game ended.
Lundmark had a combined two hits in the doubleheader.
SU hosts Mount Aloysius in a non-league contest Monday afternoon.
